Nature influences Fall color trends more than any other season.  Want proof?  How about predictions from no less than the Pantone Color Institute (PCI)!

The PCI is the group who standardized color identification and matching over the print and textile industries in 1963.  Each season, they put out a report called the Pantone Fashion Color Trend Report.  The Report summarizes seasonal color trends based upon numerous factors, including color on the catwalk at NY Fashion Week.

The Pantone Fashion Color Trend Report Fall/Winter 2018 includes colors such as Spicy Yellow, Poppy Red, Martini Olive, Russet Orange, Cognac and Red Pear.  How’s that for nature’s influence over Fall color trends.  However, in the interest of full disclosure, you will also find other colors in the report such as Quetzal Green (deep sea green) and Ultra Violet, pinks and neutrals.

Nonetheless, let’s stick with the subject at hand which is nature inspired Fall color trends and how to make the most of them.

Fall Color Trends and the Their Impact on Fashion

Spicy Yellow, a.k.a. Mustard Yellow, is a gorgeous combination of yellow and brown.  This color is inspired by the beautiful Fall leaves of the Aspen, the Big Leaf Maple or the Shagbark Hickory tree.  Mustard Yellow makes a fantastic accent piece to almost all the other Fall color trends.  Think sweaters, purses, scarfs, shoes and hats.

Martini Olive is another Autumn inspired color – but more as a complement to enhance the other vibrant colors of Fall.  As you may have already deduced, this is a shade of Olive Green.  I love this color.  This fall you will see plenty of olive skirts, pants, culottes, shoes and boots.  The real beauty of this color is that it can be paired with so many other Fall colors.

Russet Orange is of course a fall standard.  Use the beautiful combinations of the mighty Maple trees as your guide as you assemble your outfits.  Think of how stunning the yellows, reds, oranges and burgundys pair together.  For Fall 2018, other designers paired oranges and blues – and they look amazing.

Cognac is another Autumn staple.  The warm brown color of acorns is perfect as a leather accent or nail color.

Enhance Your Natural Lashes With the Right Mascara

Most women surveyed say that mascara is the one beauty product they will not leave the house without wearing.  Those of us with light colored eyelashes can truly relate to this.  My lashes are so light that you can’t see them without mascara.  People have asked me if I normally wear glasses because my eyes look so different without mascara.

Mascara makes a huge difference on people with dark colored eyelashes, also.  There are so many product formulations that you can use mascara to make your lashes appear longer, fuller, even more curly.  Mascara really is a wonder product.

How to Choose the Right Product to Showcase Your Beautiful Lashes

Some believe that beautiful, long, full lashes are not attainable…. that you are either born with eyelashes like that; or you must use fake lashes.

Nonsense, I say!  There are so many products to choose from, it is just a matter of finding the one or two products you need.  It is about finding the best wand shape and formula to enhance your lashes.  Believe me, they are out there.

For more information and helpful hints on selecting the perfect mascara to fit your needs, see, “Choose the Right Mascara for Your Desired Eye Makeup Look“.

How Important is the Shape of the Wand?

Lashes

Mascara Wands: Different Sized, Shapes, Fullness

The wand you choose is very important to achieve the look you want.  Look at the images above.  There are so many different shapes: tapered, straight, curved.  In addition, there are so many different brush styles to choose from.  Some mascaras use comb wands, some use tight bristles, a spiral shape and still others have sparse bristles.

Each different combination is configured so the user can achieve different goals.

Let’s look at some of the more common wands and their intended use:

Bristles:

  • Spiral bristles are intended for full lash coverage and eyelash separation.  That shape holds plenty of product.  The spiral shape allows you to drag your lashes through the bristles to apply product and separate out any clumps.
  • Comb bristles are for people who radically oppose clumped eyelashes.  The comb works very well for combing out clumps.  My problem with this type of bristle is that it doesn’t hold as much product as I like.  My way of eliminating clumps is to comb my lashes against the Flutterby Mascara Shield with the wand.
  • Full or fat bristles are great for those trying to achieve voluminous lashes.

Shapes:

In most cases, the shape of the wand works in concert with the bristles to help you achieve your desired look.  Some of the most common shaped brushes are:

  • Curved brushes help you to pick up every tiny lash throughout your lash line.
  • Skinny wand, as the name implies, is a long thin wand with very short bristles.  This is one of my favorite wand shapes.  It is great for separating lashes, applying additional product to lash tips, and for doing your lower lashes.
  • Tapered wands allow you to apply smaller amounts of product to the short lashes near the inner corner of your eye; and more product out toward the outer corner.

Mascara Formulas

The formulation of your mascara is as important as the wand to achieving the eyelash look you are going for.  Rest assured that manufacturers recognize this concept by the way they combine the formulations with the wand types.

For example, it would be silly to pair a thick, volumizing mascara with a skinny wand because that type of wand will not apply enough product to your lashes.

The primary ingredients in most mascaras are oils, waxes and pigments.  The most common formulations available are: lengthening and volumizing.  The combination of the primary ingredients with other products give the formulations their different characteristics.  Following is a brief discussion of each common formulation:

Lengthening mascara – In addition to the primary ingredients, lengthening mascara generally includes tiny nylon or rayon fibers that attach to your lashes as you apply the mascara.  It is these fibers that make your eyelashes appear longer than they are.

Volumizing mascara generally includes a thicker formula of waxes that adheres very well to your eyelashes giving the appearance of thick, lush eyelashes.

Beautiful Autumn Fingernails

Autumn is my favorite time of year…changing leaves, cool fresh mornings, and dry, brittle fingernails.  Wait, what?

Yes, Autumn in Wisconsin is the transitional season between Summer and Winter extremes.  We go from so hot and humid that it’s unbearable; to so cold and dry that it’s unbearable.

Aside from all that, I really love my Wisconsin.

So yes, unfortunately, the cold, dry climate in Wisconsin can really wreak havoc on your fingernails.  If you have problem fingernails to begin with, they will become more problematic in the dry air.  If your nails are brittle and you have nail ridges, then you can really have a mess with nails cracking and splitting.

That would be me.

Some of the maladies we have with our fingernails are due to age, genetics, or possibly even health issues.  Those issues will be mentioned here, but obviously treatment is better left to the professionals.

We may not be able to stop some of the other issues, but we can certainly find workarounds.

Common Nail Problems You May Encounter

As I alluded to above, some nail problems may be indicative of an underlying health issue.  Conditions you should have checked out by your doctor include:

  • Vertical ridges on your fingernails; ridges that run from side to side across your nails
  • A dark, vertical stripe under your nail
  • Discoloration of your nails not attributable to smoking or other activity
  • Obsessive nail biting
  • Extreme thickening of the nails
  • Inflamed skin around your nails

Other problems with your fingernails are often attributable to aging or genetics.  For example, I have had horizontal ridges, running from my cuticle to the nail tips, forever.  The ridges become a big problem in the dryer months, because my nails tend to split up some of the deeper ridges.  Another problem, dry and cracking cuticles.  Lastly, we can’t fail to mention brittle nails.

However, we are not going to dwell on the problems.   We are going straight to solutions!

How to Get from Brittle to Beautiful Fingernails

There are several easy things you can do to improve the appearance and health of your nails.

First and Foremost – Moisturize

There are so many ways you should be moisturizing your hands, cuticles and nails.

  • Before bed, apply a light layer of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly to your feet and your hands.  Wear cotton socks on both your feet and hands.  Yes, it will look silly.  There are moisturizing gloves you can buy for this purpose, but they are not without problems, so just go the safer, cheaper route.  Make certain to wash the socks after every use to avoid build-up of nasty stuff.
  • During the day, every time you think about it, apply hand creme to your hands, cuticles and nails.
  • Purchase a good cuticle oil or use olive oil or other products you may have in your kitchen and massage the oil into your cuticles.  Gently push your cuticles back with your finger as you massage in the oil.

Nail Care

  • Keep your fingernails short – especially if you have a lot of ridges.  When your nails are dry and brittle, they can split up the ridges or catch on things.
  • When filing your nails, file in one direction only.  Do not use a back and forth motion to take down the length.  This weakens the nail.
  • If you plan to apply nail polish, use a good base coat and ridge filler.  Allow both products to dry thoroughly.  This will give you a nice base to work with when applying your polish.

Other Miscellaneous Solutions

  • East a well-balanced diet that includes the recommended daily allowances for vitamins and minerals.
  • Drink plenty of fluids – water is the best.  The amount of fluids we should be drinking seems to change daily but a good rule of thumb is dividing your weight in pounds by two to figure out how many ounces you need.  For example, someone who weighs 150 pounds should consume a minimum of 75 ounces of fluids.
  • To keep your cuticles looking their very best and healthy, maintain them in the shower.  Your cuticles will naturally soften in the warm water of the shower.  Cover your thumb, or finger, with the wash cloth and gentle push-back the cuticle to its natural position.  Do this every other day and you’ll be amazed with your beautiful cuticles.

The first article is, “Makeup Brushes Guide: The Essential Starter Kit”.  The article explains the minimum number and type of makeup brushes that you should have in your beauty bag.

The second article, “The Mascara Shield: A Unique Product for Awesome Eyelashes“, goes into detail about the mascara shield.  The article explains what it is, how it can help you with your makeup and how to best use the product.

Third in the series, “The Beauty Sponge: Guaranteed to be Your Amazing New Favorite“, details what a beauty sponge is, how you can use them and why you will love beauty sponges once you try them.

Fourth in the series about essential beauty tools is, “Eyelash Curler: The Breakthrough Tool for Massive Fluttery Lashes“, explains how to safely use an eyelash curler to create beautiful eyelashes.

Finally, the fifth article, “Makeup Brush Cleaner Mat: A Simple Device with Outstanding Results“, explains why you need a brush cleaner mat and how to use the mat.

I have become slightly obsessed with beauty and makeup tools.  Since I started wearing makeup, which was a lot of years ago, I have questioned the lack of beauty tools.  We have so many great products available to us; but haven’t always had the tools we need to make application easier.  That is changing.

This series is about the beauty tools you should keep in your makeup bag to help you with your everyday makeup and beauty routine.   Having these tools can have a tremendous impact on the amount of time you spend getting ready each morning, so, if for no other reason, use these tools to claw back a few precious moments for yourself each day.

Beauty tools are great time savers.

What is a Dual Head Eyebrow Brush?

The dual head eyebrow brush is specially designed to expertly apply brow powders, creams, gels or pomades with ease. The angled brush head allows for precise definition for lining your brows and the stiff bristles pick up your product to fill in your brows.  On the other end of the brush is a custom spoolie to blend product and shape brows.

Why do you Need a Dual Head Eyebrow Brush?

The real benefit of this multi-tasking tool is just how versatile it is.  It’s designed so everyone from the beginner to the brow enthusiast can easily create great looking brows…but there are so many other uses.

Starting with the angled brush end, it is perfect for any product application, not just brows, that requires a fine, straight edge or deep color intensity.  The brush, with its firm bristles and ѕlаntеd head, fits closely into the lash line for smooth and even application of any type of eyeliner including liquid, gel, or powders.  You can also use the angled tip to create winged eyeliner looks.

It is also a great choice for creating very dramatic looks of deep eye shadow color intensity such as cat eye makeup looks. The thin, angled, precise tip allows you to draw hair-like strokes.

Now let’s talk about the spoolie end!  I am mad about them.  Spoolies are perfect for shaping your brows after applying brow products.  The also work great to comb out your lashes before you curl them with your eyelash curler.  Finally, many people use a spoolie to comb out their lashes after they apply their mascara.  It gives your lashes a ‘falsies’ perfection look.

This great product is also perfect for travel.  You can replace several separate products with one item.

How to Use

For eyebrows, sweep the tip of the angled brush through your brow product.  Starting at the inner corner of the brow, outline the bottom and top of your brow creating clean lines.  After lining your brows, fill-in with color using short strokes to create the look of natural brow hair.

When using for precise application of other products, such as such as eyeliner, hold the brush like a pencil, up close to the ferrule for maximum control, then draw your line.  If using to apply intense color, press or stipple the angled edge into the area of coverage.

Finish the lооk with your spoolie.  Gently brush through your brows with the ѕрооliе to lightly blend the product; then finish by combing your eyebrows in the direction of natural growth.  For tips on grooming and shaping your eyebrows see: “Eyebrows Are Huge – Have you Noticed!”.

Care and Maintenance of your Eyebrow Brush

Maintenance:  Wash the brush and spoolie every one to two weeks with brush cleanser shampoo and a brush cleaning mat.  If you use the spoolie to comb your lashes after applying mascara, it should be washed every time it is used.

Replace the brush if it begins to lose bristles or its shape.

Beauty tools are great time savers.

What is a Makeup Brush Cleaner Mat?

A makeup brush cleaner mat is a small, silicone mat, with suction cups on the bottom, used to clean makeup brushes.  The mats generally have several different patterns of texture meant to clean different types of brushes.  The suction cups on the bottom of the mat are there to hold the mat in place in your sink as you clean your brushes.

Do You Need a Makeup Brush Cleaner?

If you do a quick Google search on the subject of, “dangers of dirty makeup brushes”, the answer is an emphatic YES!  You will find page after page of scary stories about very serious bacterial infections that people have contracted from bacteria laden makeup brushes.  Especially, relative to brushes used for eye makeup.

Though it is rare to contract serious infections from dirty brushes, on a common-sense level we know we should pay attention to cleaning our brushes.  At a minimum, we know remnants of our makeup products will remain trapped in the dense bristles.  Additionally, we know some very unpleasant things can grow in damp, dark places with no airflow – like bristles.

Another factor to consider is the longevity of the brushes.  Cleaning out the built-up product and oils from your skin will make the brushes last longer.

In the end, there is no question.  You need to clean your makeup brushes.  The only question is how you will do it.

You may opt for a do-it-yourself method of cleaning your brushes.  In general, that includes wetting the brushes, adding cleanser and massaging the cleanser deeply into the bristles.  That option is fine if you have only a couple of brushes to clean.

However, if you have several brushes that you need to clean, the DIY process is very tedious.  I recommend using the makeup brush cleaner mat regardless of the number of brushes you must clean.  I believe the mat does a better job of cleaning.

How to Use a Brush Cleansing Mat

Brush Cleaner Mat

Small Makeup Brush Cleaner Mat

Cleaning your brushes with a brush cleaner mat is simple and efficient.  Start with a clean sink and a clean mat.  Lay the mat in the sink so the suction cups attach to hold the mat in place.

Wet your brushes with water and apply a dollop of brush cleansing shampoo to each brush.  Gently scrub the bristles into the mat to remove all build-up of product and oils.  Use all the different textures available to thoroughly cleanse the bristles.

Rinse your brushes under warm water; again, using the textures to remove all remnants of shampoo from the brushes.

The final step is to gently squeeze the brush heads to remove excess water; then reshape the bristles before allowing them to dry.  Lay the brushes flat to dry.

What is an Eyelash Curler?

An eyelash curler is a mechanical, hand-held device used to curl your lashes.  The better lash curlers are made of stainless steel, have a sturdy silicone pad to cushion your lashes and a comfortable, rubber lined grip.

I prefer metal eyelash curlers because I like to warm the curler before using it on my lashes.  Plastic lash curlers are available, but, they do not work for me.

eyelash curler

Eyelash Curler – Showing Metal Construction, Padded Handles and Open Lash Bed

A sturdy, well maintained pad to cushion your lashes is an imperative.  Used the correct way, curlers are not damaging to your eyelashes.  However, it’s important to make it a habit to ensure the pad is in good shape before you use the lash curler on your lashes.

Regarding the grip, make certain the grip has cushioned handles.  Curling your lashes can be a two-step process and you want to make certain you have the best and most comfortable tools to work with.

To create beautifully curled, natural looking lashes, makeup artists swear by eyelash curlers.  Curling your eyelashes before applying mascara will give the appearance of thicker, more lush lashes.

Even those who wear false eyelashes can benefit from using an eyelash curler.  If you curl your lashes and apply mascara before applying the false eyelashes, your lashes will blend in more uniformly with the curled false lashes.

One big no-no to mention; do not curl your lashes after applying mascara.  You may have seen vloggers use an eyelash curler after applying their mascara in some videos.  I do not recommend that.  You know for certain, you will make a mess with the wet mascara.  More importantly though, you can potentially damage your lashes.

How to Use an Eyelash Curler

Some people are intimidated by the thought of using a lash curler.  Indeed, when you hear the horror stories about people pinching their eyelids or pulling out lashes; it gives you pause.  However, if used properly, lash curlers are a safe, beauty enhancing product.

Before you curl your eyelashes, do the following:

  • Complete all your other eye makeup; your mascara should be the last step
  • Comb your lashes with a spoolie to comb out fibers, etc., and ensure lashes are forward facing

To use the eyelash curler most effectively:

eyelash curler

Eyelash Curler

  • Use a hair dryer to warm the lash bed of the curler.  To do so, simply point the hair dryer at the lash bed for 5 – 10 seconds.  Caution: Grasp the closure with your hand before using to make certain it is not too hot; you can possibly burn your eyelids or your eyes if it gets too warm
  • Open the eyelash curler and position the top edge along your lash line; making certain to get all your lashes between the clamps.  Place the top edge close to the lash root, but, keep in mind that the top edge is thinner than the bottom edge of the clamp, so leave enough space so you do not pinch your eyelids.  Do a light squeeze test to ensure that you are not pinching your eyelid when the curler is closed
  • When you are comfortable with the position of the curler, squeeze and release the handles 8 – 10 times
  • Check the curl in your lashes.  If you are happy with the look then you are ready to apply mascara.  If you desire more curl, move the curler out toward the tips of your lashes and perform the curling process again

After use, wipe off any accumulated product, if necessary.  Inspect the pads every month to ensure they are not cracked or breaking.  Replace the pads as necessary.

The Third Article in a Continuing Series on Essential Beauty Tools

This is the third article in a series about essential beauty tools; this is about the beauty sponge.

The first article is, “Makeup Brushes Guide: The Essential Starter Kit”.  The article explains the minimum number and type of makeup brushes that you should have in your beauty bag.

The second article, “The Mascara Shield: A Unique Product for Awesome Eyelashes“, goes into detail about what a mascara shield is, how it can help you with your makeup and how to best use the product.

The series is about the beauty tools you should keep in your makeup bag to help you with your everyday makeup and beauty routine.   Having these tools available to you can have a tremendous impact on the amount of time you spend getting ready each morning, so, if for no other reason, use these tools to claw back a few precious moments for yourself each day.

Beauty tools are great time savers.

What is a Beauty Sponge?

A beauty sponge is a foam sponge that comes in various sizes and shapes used for makeup application.  These multi-purpose little marvels are used for foundation and concealer application.  They are also fantastic for flawless blush or contour blending and for eye shadow and powder blending.  They save us from streaks, stripes and unblended makeup of all sorts.

The сеll structure of the sponge fills with water to ensure that the product sits on tор of the sponge, rather than being absorbed into it.  In fact, the sponges almost double in size when wet.  They can be used wet or dry, depending upon what type of product you are applying.

The sponges come in myriad shapes and sizes for many different purposes.  The most common shapes are the teardrop and flat edge sponges and they come in regular and mini sizes.  See below:

beauty sponge

Flat Edge and Teardrop Mini Sponge

When you purchase beauty sponges, make certain you buy non-latex sponges.  Some people have an allergic reaction to latex.  Don’t find out the hard way that you have an allergy to latex.  Find information about latex allergies here.

How to Use Beauty Sponges

For my makeup application, I use a regular sized flat edge makeup sponge and a teardrop mini sponge.  I wet both sponges before using.  I consider them to be the essential beauty sponges for your beauty bag, especially if you use liquid foundation, concealer or blush.

A flat edge beauty sponge is the larger of the two sponges.  It is shaped like an egg that has a flat cut on the bottom.  This flat edge makes for easy application of foundation, lotions, etc.  The pointed end is great for targeted application and blending, such as highlighter on your cheeks or foundation on your neck.

You can dive into the details with the teardrop mini design.  With its compact size, it is perfect for hаrd-tо-rеасh ѕроtѕ such as around the eyes and nose.  Use the mini sponge for precise application for the smaller areas of your fасе such as under-eye concealer or eye shadow on the inner corners of the eyes.

To use:  Fully saturate the sponge with water, then squeeze out the excess.  For product application, apply product to the face and use a dabbing or stippling motion to spread the product evenly over the desired area.  Use the damp sides of the sponge to completely blend out any edges.

Care and Maintenance of Makeup Sponges

When used for application of liquid products, such as foundation or concealer, rinse well with water after every use.  Wash with soap and water every three to four days.  For best results, place the sponges in a sealable container, add soap and enough hot water to cover the sponges, replace the lid and shake well.  Allow the sponges to sit in the sudsy water for ½ hour.  Massage the soapy water into the sponges with your fingers to clean away any remaining stains, then rinse very well with hot water.  Squeeze out the excess water and continue to squeeze dry with paper towels.

Replace the sponges every two to three months as the foam begins to break down.

The Second Article in a Continuing Series on Essential Beauty Tools

This is the second article in a series about essential beauty tools; this is about the mascara shield.

The first article, “Makeup Brushes Guide: The Essential Starter Kit”, explains the minimum number and type of makeup brushes that you should have in your beauty bag.

The series is about the beauty tools you should keep in your arsenal (a.k.a. makeup bag) to help you with your everyday makeup and beauty routine.   Having these tools available to you can have a tremendous impact on the amount of time you spend getting ready each morning, so, if for no other reason, use these tools to claw back a few precious moments for yourself each day.

Beauty tools are not simply great time savers, the beauty tools in this series work amazingly well.

What is a Mascara Shield?

The term ‘mascara shield’ may not be familiar to everyone.  Other terms used to describe this tool include mascara guard, mascara shield guard, mascara tool, or lash guard.  Whatever you call it, this unique tool aids in the quick and mess-free application of mascara.  It prevents mascara smudges and clumps; thereby making the entire process of application much faster.  You can quickly get the eyelash look you desire.

A good quality mascara shield is a must for every beauty bag.  The Flutterby Mascara Shield prevents mascara smudging on your flawlessly applied eye shadow and eyeliner; it also prevents black smears under your lower lashes.  In addition, the Shield is great for preventing mascara clumps in your lashes.  To eliminate clumps, simply comb your lashes against the shield with your mascara wand.  This not only eliminates clumps but also creates natural looking lashes.

The Shield is shaped to fit snugly along your upper and lower lash lines.  The thin construction of the Shield allows you to position the mascara wand right at the lash root without getting any mascara on your eyelids.  Another unique part of the design is a very small lip along the edge of the Shield.  The lip keeps your lashes from sticking to the shield as you apply your mascara.  With the Flutterby Mascara Shield, you can coat your lashes from the lash root to the tips to make the lashes appear more full and lush.

Upper Eyelash Application

To use:  To prevent mascara smudges on your upper eyelids, first, place the Shield above your upper lashes along your lash line.  Next, comb the mascara wand down the top of your lashes from root to tip.  This covers the top of your lashes with mascara adding fullness.  Finally, use the wand to comb and distribute mascara to the underside of your lashes.  Comb from root to tip; slightly wiggling the wand back and forth to separate lashes.

To eliminate mascara clumps, comb your lashes against the Shield with the mascara wand.

Lower Lashes Application

Similarly, for your lower lashes, nestle the Shield snugly along the lash line under your lashes.  For easiest application, hold the wand vertically as you apply mascara to your lash roots; then horizontally as you apply product out to the tip.

Eliminate any mascara clumps by combing your lashes against the Shield with the mascara wand.

Important:  Wipe the Flutterby Mascara Shield on a tissue between every use.  If not removed, wet mascara left on the shield could transfer to your skin

Maintenance:  Wipe off with a tissue between every use to prevent mascara transfer.   After completing mascara application, wash with soap and water, dry, then put back in vinyl case.

Comments on the Flutterby Mascara Shield

In the interest of full disclosure, the Shield is my product.  I developed the product after I retired several years ago.

It was never my intention to become a product designer – you could say product design chose me!  The thing is, I waited all my adult working life for someone to design a product like this and it just never happened.  So finally, I designed my own.

I needed a product like the Shield because mascara application has always been a problem for me.  My eyelashes are very light colored; so light, in fact, that you really can’t see them unless I have mascara on.  For that reason, I have always needed to make certain to get mascara coverage from the root to tip.  Otherwise, you could see the color difference.

Unfortunately, to get mascara up to the lash root, you will get some of the product on your eyelids.  Thus, I always had smudges on my upper eyelids that I had to clean up.  Compounding the problem is the fact that I also wear mascara on my lower lashes.  They are long, so I always had little smears under my lashes as well.

These are not earth-shattering problems, but they are a pain to have to deal with.  Furthermore, it was such a waste of time.

Face Shapes

Do you know what your face shape is?  For example, is your face oval, round, heart-shaped?

More importantly, why should you care about your face shape?

Why You Should Figure Out Your Face Shape

Knowing the shape of your face is important for several reasons.  For example, knowing the shape can help you pick flattering hairstyles, attractive eyeglasses, and it can even help with your makeup.  See, “Your Face: Let Your Facial Features Show You Where to Put on Makeup”.

Tell me if this has ever happened to you.  You find a hairstyle that you absolutely love.  It is the cutest haircut you’ve ever seen, so off you go to your hair appointment.  Unfortunately, when you leave the shop, that super cute inverted bob cut makes you look like a little Dutch boy without the hat!  No offense to little Dutch boys – they are adorable; but not everyone has a cute, little round face shape to pull that off.  Sadly, that is my story.

Now, many people would not care.  If they liked that style, they would try it; and to them I say, “Good for You”.  I believe you should do whatever makes you happy with your looks.  The problem for me was, that cut didn’t make me happy – it looked silly on me.

The Different Face Shapes

Generally the beauty industry recognizes six different face shapes.  They are oval, square, round, oblong, diamond and heart shaped.

To determine what the shape of your face is, follow the process below:

  • Look in a mirror and determine the widest part of your face.  For instance, does your forehead seem wider than your cheekbones or jawline; are your cheekbones the widest part; or, maybe it is all the same width?
  • Next, look at your chin and the shape of your jawline.  Is your jawline narrowed or squared off?  Does your chin come to a soft point?
  • What is the length of your face.  Does it seem as long as it is wide; or maybe it is a narrow width but long?

Using this information, compare it to the descriptions below to determine your face shape:

Oval Face – The face is longer than it is wide.  People with an oval face generally have a rounded chin and may have a wider forehead.

Square Face – If you have a square face, the length and width of your face are almost the same.  A square face is characterized by a wide forehead and an angular, squared off jawline.

Round Face – You have a round face if the length and width, at the widest part of your face, are the same; your chin is rounded; and your forehead and jawline are the same width.

Oblong Face – Also called rectangular; people with this face shape tend to have longer and less wide faces.

Diamond Face – Wide cheekbones and a pointed chin and a narrow forehead define this shape.

Heart Shaped Face – People with this face shape have narrow chins, wider cheekbones and foreheads.

So Now What?

Now that you have figured out the shape of your face, what do you do with that information?

Let’s start with some ideas for your hair.

Consider bangs if you have a longer face, as in an oval or oblong face shape, bangs will help to balance your face.  If you have a round face, avoid straight cut bangs that will emphasize the fullness of your face.   Also, if your face is heart shaped, side swept bangs will de-emphasize the width of your forehead.

Another option to try is layers in your hair; layers can make a big difference.  Layers on the sides add volume, helping to de-emphasize longer faces.   Also, long layers are an ideal choice for those with round faces; they elongate the face.  They also look great on people with diamond shaped faces.

The length of your hair is another factor.  Long, straight hair emphasizes a long face.  Those people with round faces can go both extremes; they look fantastic in short, pixie cuts and long layers look amazing on them.  To de-emphasize a square jawline, consider a bob cut just below the chin.

Once you determine your face shape, I think you’ll find that your options are endless.

First Article in a Series on Essential Beauty Tools

Makeup artists have long argued that ideal application requires the ideal tools; this makeup brushes guide is provided to give you a listing of the beauty brushes you should have in your beauty kit.

To keep it simple, we break it down into two categories: brushes for applying makeup to the face and brushes for applying eye makeup.

ANGLED BLUSH/BRONZER BRUSH

The ѕlаntеd shape of the angled blush brush оffеrѕ precision аррliсаtiоn for a ѕсulрtеd lооk. This fluffy аnglеd brush is реrfесt for a precise ѕwеер of blush right along the сhееkbоnеs.  If used for contouring, the soft angled briѕtlеѕ реrfесtlу fit the curves under your сhееks to expertly define, ѕhаре аnd contour your сhееk аrеа.

To use:  Sweep the angled brush on the blush or bronzer product, tap off any excess and apply the blush along your cheekbones and the bronzer or contour under cheekbones.  See “Your Face: Let Your Facial Features Show You Where to Put on Makeup” for more information on where to apply your blush or bronzer.

CONTOUR BRUSH

The slanted briѕtlеѕ of the contour brush help you to easily аррlу соntоur роwdеr below your сhееkbоnеѕ tо emphasize уоur natural contours. Contouring hеlрѕ add definition to the face.  Skillfully applied соntоuring will give уоu the illusion of high, prominent сhееkbоnеѕ and a firm, well-defined jawline. The contour brush also hеlрѕ blend the powder ѕо any sharp edges diѕарреаr, but slight ѕhаding rеmаinѕ.

To use:  Sweep the contour brush through the contour powder or bronzer, tap off any excess and apply the bronzer or contour under cheekbones.  See “Your Face: Let Your Facial Features Show You Where to Put on Makeup” for more information on where to place your bronzer.

Makeup Brushes Guide for Eye Makeup

Recommended eye makeup brushes to include in your essential beauty tools collection:

SHADOW BLENDING BRUSH

This brush is used to blend out уоur eye shadow. The long dome-shaped briѕtlеѕ fan out to diffuse еуе ѕhаdоw pigments and to blend shadow seamlessly for a ѕоft еуе lооk.  The finely tapered bristles are grеаt for transition of ѕhаdеѕ just above the crease.  Use this brush to blend shadow to ensure no harsh еdgеѕ in уоur eye makeup lооks.

Eye Makeup Brushes

To use: For blending, swipe back and forth, or in a circular motion all over your eyelids to eliminate shade transitions.  If using for eye shadow application, swipe the bristles into the eye shadow and tap off any excess; press the bristles into the eyelid for a more intense color or sweep the bristles over the area of coverage, if lighter intensity is desired.  The domed shape of the brush makes it not suitable for precise application looks.

POINTED CREASE BRUSH

The pointed crease brush is generally used to аррlу еуе ѕhаdоw tо thе сrеаѕе of the upper eyelids.   The роintеd tip of the brush is shaped for defining the inner and оutеr соrnеrѕ of the eye and for blending еуе ѕhаdоw into the crease.  Additionally, the shape allows for the precise application of color to smaller eye spaces; for example, the application of highlighter to the inner corners of the eye.

To use:  Swipe the bristles over the product and tap off any excess.  For more intense color, press the bristles into the crease.  If lighter intensity is desired, sweep the bristles over the area of coverage.  The shape of the brush makes it an excellent choice for blending shadow into the crease or for creating dramatic eye shadow looks. For tips on how and where to apply eye shadow, see “How to Achieve Those Dramatic Eye Shadow Looks”.

PRECISION ANGLED EYELINER BRUSH

This angled brush is perfect for аnу product application that requires a fine, straight edge or deep color intensity.  An аbѕоlutе multi-tаѕking tооl, the angled eyeliner brush, with its firm bristles and ѕlаntеd hеаd, fits сlоѕеlу into the lаѕh line for ѕmооth and even аррliсаtiоn of any type of eyeliner including liquid, gel, or powders.  Use the angled tip to create winged eyeliner looks.

It is also a great choice for creating very dramatic looks of deep eye shadow color intensity such as cat eye makeup looks. The thin, angled, рrесiѕе tip allows you to draw hair-like ѕtrоkеѕ.

To use:  Apply product to the angled end of the brush.  When using for precise product application, such as lining, hold the brush like a pencil, up close to the ferrule for maximum control, then draw your line.  If using to apply intense color, press or stipple the angled edge into the area of coverage.  Finally, if using to fill-in brows, make short, hair like strokes in the direction of the hair growth as you apply color.  For tips on how and where to apply eyeliner, see “Eyeliner Style Mastery – Eyeliner Tips to up Your Game”.

Care and Maintenance of Makeup Brushes

How to clean makeup brushes:  Wash your makeup brushes every one to two weeks, or more often if using liquid products.  For best results, use brush cleanser shampoo and a brush cleaning mat.  Wet your brushes with warm water and place a dollop of brush cleansing shampoo on each brush.  Gently scrub the brushes into the mat to remove all build-up; then thoroughly rinse the brushes with warm water.  Gently squeeze the brush hеаds to rеmоvе еxсеѕѕ water then reshape the brushes before allowing them to dry.  To dry, lay the brushes on a counter with the bristles over the edge of the counter to facilitate air drying.

Replace the brush if it begins to lose bristles or its shape.
