I’m not just talking size, but yes, they have become quite large. More importantly, our eyebrows are such an important feature on our face, both aesthetically and expressively.
Aesthetically, our brows frame our faces. Unkempt brows with little to no makeup, or poorly done makeup, really detract from your appearance.
Expressively, it is difficult to communicate emotions without using our brows.
I want to focus on the aesthetics of our brows. How we shape, groom and style them. I also want to talk about the anxiety many people have when it comes to doing their brows…I was surprised.
Eyebrow Styles Over the Years
Look at some of the fashionable brow styles introduced over the years:
In the early days of film, the 1920s through the late 1930s, Clara Bow and others made pencil thin brows the ‘it’ look. The film actresses of the 1940s through the 1960s reintroduced eyebrows again. We started to see thicker, well-groomed brows like Audrey Hepburn. After that, it was difficult to keep up with brow styles because they changed so quickly. We went from Twiggy’s super thin brows to Brooke Shields beautiful thick brows.
Fortunately, we no longer adhere to celebrity styles for our definition of ‘perfect brows’.
Perfect eyebrows are the brows we are born with…. then it is up to us whether we use them or abuse them.
How to Shape Eyebrows for the Perfect Look
There are several different methods for shaping your brows. My default is the tried and true home remedy of tweezing my brows.
I am fortunate in that I like the shape of my brows so there is little I do to shape them. See, Your Face: Let Your Facial Features Show You Where to Put on Makeup”, for tips on how to shape your brows. I do have to do a fair amount of clean-up under my brows because I have a lot of fine hair growing there, but I try to keep on top of it by plucking every time I apply makeup.
Other methods for shaping your brows:
Waxing: You can buy home kits or have your brows waxed at a salon. I had a disastrous experience with a home kit and I will not ever try that again. For that reason, I would recommend a professional.
Threading: An ancient method of hair removal that removes hair at the root. The process involves a technician using two threads wrapped together. The technician drags the threads along the skin to catch stray hairs to remove them. Threading salons claim that it is less painful than plucking, can easily be used above and below the brows and is more precise. After watching a few videos on threading, I would like to give it a try.
How to Fill-in Your Brows for the Perfect Look
Generally, I use only powder to fill-in my eyebrows. I mostly go for a more natural eye makeup look so I want my brows to match. My favorite tools are a spoolie and an eyebrow brush. For a more natural look, try to keep the color a few shades darker than your normal brow color and build the color as you go.
Other semi-permanent to permanent methods for filling-in your brows:
Tattooing and microblading fall into this category. Microblading is considered semi-permanent because it is a form of tattoo, but it fades over a period of one to two years. Actual tattooing, on the other hand, should be considered permanent.
